How can we help?

Answers to the questions people ask most, and a person to write to when they don't cover it.

Getting started

What is Cigar Locker?

A collection, inventory and journal app for iPhone. It keeps every humidor you own and every purchase in it, identifies cigars from a photo of the band or box, looks up their details, shows your SensorPush humidity readings, keeps your journal, and lets you share what you're enjoying with friends you choose.

Do I need an account?

Not to keep your collection. Your humidors, purchases, journal, humidity readings, import and export all work on your iPhone without one, even with no signal.

Signing in backs your collection up, and it is needed for scanning, look-ups, Suggest One, pairings and Friends, because those use our server. Accounts are for adults 21 and over.

Does Cigar Locker sell cigars?

No. Nothing can be bought in the app, and it shows no shop prices, offers or links to stores. The prices you see are what you entered, or an estimate (usually the maker's suggested retail price), always marked as one.

Which phones does it run on?

Cigar Locker is an iPhone app.

Your account and the age check

How do I sign in?

Go to Settings > Account and tap Sign in with Apple. If you choose Apple's Hide My Email, we receive a private relay address instead of your own, and that's fine. We don't ask for your name.

Use the same Apple ID on every iPhone you use Cigar Locker on, so they share one collection.

Why do you ask for my date of birth?

Cigar Locker is for adults 21 and over, the US age for tobacco. When the app is first opened it asks you to confirm your age, and the first time you sign in, we ask for your date of birth and can't create an account for anyone younger.

Why do you ask for my ZIP code?

For the weather where you live, which Suggest One and some home screen styles use. If you allow it, your ZIP code is also used for anonymous market research (next question).

What is the market research box?

When it is ticked, your purchases (what was bought, where, the price and why) are counted together with other members' by ZIP code, to understand the cigar market. Only pooled figures are ever produced, never one drawn from fewer than 10 people, and never your name, email or anything that says it was you.

You can change it any time at Settings > Account.

I have a new iPhone. How do I get my collection back?

Install Cigar Locker, go to Settings > Account and sign in with the same Apple ID. Your backup, photos included, comes down on its own.

Scanning a band or box

How do I scan a cigar?

On Collection, tap +, then Take photo, or Upload photo to use one already in your photos. A single cigar or a box both work. The form fills itself in; check it, choose a humidor and save.

How do I get the size measured?
  • Lay the cigar flat on a table beside a dollar bill, a credit card, a business card, a quarter or a ruler.
  • Hold the phone straight above, not at an angle, with the whole cigar and the whole card or bill in the picture.
  • Get close enough that the band fills a good part of the photo, so it can be read.

The size is matched to the nearest one that line is made in. When it isn't sure, it says check this.

It named the wrong cigar. What now?

Tap Not correct? Think harder for a slower, closer look at the same photo, or choose one of the close matches it offers. You can also type the name yourself: everything a scan fills in can be changed before you save, and edited later.

Is there a limit on scans?

Each account has a generous daily allowance of scans, look-ups and suggestions. If you reach it, the app says so, and it starts again the next day.

Very occasionally the whole app's allowance for the month runs out. Scanning, look-ups and suggestions then rest until the date the app names; everything else, your collection, humidity and journal included, works as usual.

Importing a collection

Can I bring my collection from another app?
  1. In your old app, export your collection as a spreadsheet file (CSV) and save it to the Files app.
  2. In Cigar Locker, go to Settings > Your data > Import a collection.
  3. Choose the file, or paste its contents. Check the spelling fixes it offers (untick any you don't want), choose a humidor, and bring it in.

Columns such as Brand, Line, Size or Vitola, Wrapper, Country, Quantity, Rating and Humidor are recognized by name, in any order. Cigars you already have are never added twice, and cigars with none left keep their ratings. Ratings out of 5 are doubled to fit the 10-star scale.

It says my file can't be read.

Import reads spreadsheet files saved as CSV. If you have an Excel or Numbers workbook, save or export it as CSV first, then choose that file.

Can I undo an import?

Yes. The import can be taken back out until something happens to the cigars it brought in, such as a move or a journal entry.

Can I export my collection?

Yes: Settings > Your data has Export your collection and Export your journal, each a spreadsheet file you can save or send.

Humidity and SensorPush

Which sensors does Cigar Locker work with?

SensorPush temperature and humidity sensors, through your own SensorPush account.

Do I need a SensorPush gateway?

Yes. SensorPush sensors talk over Bluetooth, and their readings reach SensorPush's cloud, and so Cigar Locker, only through a SensorPush WiFi Gateway near them. If your humidors are in more than one house, each house needs its own gateway.

Can I see it without sensors?

Yes. Add a humidor first, then go to Settings > Humidity > SensorPush sensors > Connect SensorPush and tap No sensors yet? See a sample. Six sample sensors with a month of pretend readings appear in your humidor, drawn as a cabinet map. Remove them any time from the same screen.

How do I connect my sensors?
  1. If you have never used another app with SensorPush, sign in once at SensorPush's dashboard website (dashboard.sensorpush.com) and accept their terms. Until then SensorPush won't let any app connect.
  2. In Cigar Locker, go to Settings > Humidity > SensorPush sensors and sign in with your SensorPush email and password.
  3. Put each sensor in the humidor it sits in.

For a big cabinet with several sensors, names that say where each one is (Top Left, Middle Right, Bottom Left) let Cigar Locker place them on the cabinet map. You can also place them by hand.

Is my SensorPush password safe?

It is kept in your iPhone's secure Keychain and sent only to SensorPush, never to us. Your readings come straight from SensorPush to your phone.

Will Cigar Locker warn me when the humidity drifts?

Cigar Locker checks your sensors while it is open, and shows each humidor in green when it's on target, amber when it's too dry, too humid or uneven, and gray when a sensor hasn't reported for 90 minutes. It doesn't send alerts while it's closed, so keep SensorPush's own alerts on if you rely on them.

A sensor shows gray. Why?

Gray means no reading for 90 minutes. Check that the gateway is plugged in and online, and that the sensor is in range of it and has battery.

Friends and safety

How do I add a friend?

Open the Friends tab, choose a username and agree to the friends' rules. Then use Find people to search by name or username and send a request, or Invite with a code for someone who doesn't have the app yet. A code works once, for a week.

Who sees what I post?

Only friends you have added, never the public. For each post you choose all friends or just some. In Privacy on the Friends tab you can hide your posts from particular friends, and choose whether people can find you by search.

Your journal's ratings and tasting notes stay yours. Telling friends from a journal entry is off unless you turn it on.

How do I block or report someone?

Open their page from the Friends tab and tap Block or Report. To report a single message or reply, press and hold it. Blocking ends the friendship and hides your conversation. Reports are reviewed within 24 hours, and anyone who breaks the friends' rules is removed.

Your data and backups

Where is my collection kept?

On your iPhone first. When you're signed in, it is also backed up to our server, hosted by Supabase in the United States, where only your account can read it. That includes the photos you take. Your humidity readings and the app's settings, such as your chosen style, stay on the phone.

Backups happen when you sign in, when you open the app, every few minutes while it's open, and shortly after each change.

Where do the product photos come from?

For a cigar without a photo of your own, Cigar Locker may show a product photo from the maker's or another website, loaded from where it lives, with the site named under it. Your own photo always takes its place: tap Use your own photo on the cigar's page.

What happens to my data?

Your collection lives on your iPhone, is backed up privately when you sign in, and is yours to export to a spreadsheet or delete at any time. The privacy policy says exactly what is kept, why and who can see it.

Deleting your account

How do I delete my account?

Go to Settings > Account and tap Delete account. This permanently removes from our server your account, profile, backup and its photos, and your username, friends, posts, replies and messages.

Your collection stays on your iPhone. To remove it from the phone as well, delete the app.

What does signing out do?

It forgets your account on that iPhone. Your collection stays on the phone and your backup stays on the server, ready for when you sign in again.
